Many of our affiliates may have seen this message on our corporate blog or in an email we sent out, but I wanted to discuss it a little further in my own blog.

Everyone who knows us at Empower Network knows that we believe in personal freedom. Everyone who knows us knows we put our affiliates and their interests above all else.

When it comes to our attention that an affiliate is standing in the way or encroaching upon another affiliate’s right to entrepreneurial freedom, we take it very seriously.

As of Oct. 21, anyone who is, after a full investigation, found to be cross-recruiting someone he or she did not personally enroll in Empower Network will be suspended for one month. Anyone who chooses to continue cross-recruiting in this manner will be removed from our community and we will permanently terminate the affiliate relationship.

The reason why we frown upon this practice and view it as unethical is that it splits the recruit’s focus and effectively robs the affiliate who originally brought him into Empower Network.

If you personally enroll (not a pass-up) someone into Empower Network, you are free to discuss any company outside of Empower Network together.

Anyone who believes that something great can be built by stealing opportunistically is simply wrong.

Empower Network is one of few companies in the industry that has grown organically. We’ve never once given out a back-room deal to a leader, nor have we ever offered performance incentives for people to raid a group or company. It’s something we’ll never do.

One of the questions I’m asked all the time is why someone would choose the field of affiliate marketing. My response is, “Why not?”

Sure, there are many ways to start a business and become an entrepreneur, but I would argue that affiliate marketing offers the best type of business model for success and a fulfilling work/life balance.

  • Affiliate marketing is one of the fastest growing business models because it offers a low startup cost. In fact, it’s free to join an affiliate program (beware of those that charge an upfront fee).
  • You can start on a part-time or full-time basis.
  • Your success depends entirely on you and how hard you’re willing to work.
  • There are no office politics, personality clashes or coworkers who step on you so they can get ahead.
  • There’s plenty of help available for assistance in creating your website, such as Hostgator and GoDaddy.
  • Almost no business or product is off-limits. You can sell everything from jewelry to cell phones to travel services. It’s best to pick something you’re already interested in for greatest success.
  • You can choose from review-related sites, where you review products in your industry, or resource-based sites, where you provide valuable content to your readers.
  • There are many opportunities for networking and learning from others at affiliate events held in various locations throughout the year.
  • Affiliate marketing is a great way to enter a competitive market without having to create a brand new product, carry large amounts of inventory or worry about production costs and distribution.
  • The growth of the Internet and online technology has given a turbo boost to this kind of business model.
  • You don’t have to acquire office or storage space and there are no employees to manage.
  • Customer support or complaints are typically not your problem. (However, to increase your success, it’s crucial to choose a company with a great record of customer service.)
  • By providing valuable content and working to make your site the premier source for your product, you’re also learning more about an industry that you’re already passionate about.
  • With affiliate marketing, you can reach prospects all over the world without leaving the comfort of your computer.
  • At other jobs, you usually have to be physically present and continually active in order to make money. In affiliate marketing, when you operate your business professionally and actively, it’s possible to earn money even when not sitting in front of your computer.
  • Affiliate marketing fosters a creative, entrepreneurial spirit and the thrill that comes from building your own business, monitoring your progress and discovering ways to make it better all the time.

Of course, I’m always quick to point out that affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes hard work, but the ends absolutely justify the means. 1. Focusing on opportunity first, instead of product

11. Choosing too many products

12. Impatience

But there are always those who seem to think this sentiment doesn’t apply to them – that they’re the exception to the rule and will make money quickly and easily. As a result, they run around with no real plan and are apt to make impatient, rash decisions in the pursuit of a quick buck. This leads to a big letdown when they discover the truth for themselves.

The most unsuccessful affiliate marketers are the ones who don’t take the time and effort to make their businesses sustainable and profitable. Perhaps the saddest part is that they’ll never know how terrific their businesses might have been.

Don’t do it: The WORST career advice I ever received

I recently shared some of my most helpful tips when considering careers (link to Part 1). I thought posting the worst career advice I ever received in my professional life would make for a nice contrast and two-part lesson.

Clearly, I’ve chosen an entrepreneurial path. Empower Network is a business built on the philosophy that good ideas exist at every turn, and we all have the power to fine-tune those ideas to make them stronger, more successful and even better than ever. However, multitudes avoid entrepreneurship, as it can be unstable, challenging and difficult to predict, and, most importantly, failure there is always an option.

But regardless of the chosen career path, there is always some questionable overarching advice floating around, and each time it surfaces, I cringe.

1. “Hard work will get you everywhere.” Generally speaking, working hard will produce results. However, working smarter – not harder – often leads to even better results, a happier and less tired disposition and, of course, less time wasted. Abraham Lincoln once said, “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four of them sharpening my axe.” His overall philosophy was that taking a more strategic and thoughtful approach to life was significantly more effective than brute force. Ask the right questions to reach your answers and avoid using hard work as a supplement to or replacement for diligent thought.

In my career, I’ve come across many distressed organizations that resort to work for work’s sake without applying the necessary mental filters required to ask solutions-oriented questions. Sometimes work is just … work. Don’t just do something to do it. Do something with committed intelligence, passion and the know-how to get it done efficiently and effectively the first time, rather than spinning your wheels aimlessly in the hopes of something finally clicking. For example, if you’re struggling with a project at work, don’t just spend endless hours on it. Instead, step back and consider the project from other angles to determine where your roadblocks are. Is it a design flaw? Is a team member’s analysis not spot-on? Is the timeline for delivery unrealistic? Are there too many opinions and too few steps forward? Every problem has a solution, but rather than invest hour after hour, stop. Consider a solution from a different perspective.

2. “Follow the money; forget personal satisfaction.” In our increasingly materialistic culture, it can be difficult to preach success as more than just cash-in-hand (or a bank account). Granted, we all need money to live, but what amount of money is enough? Too often, people set their sights on a figure, yet what they don’t realize is that even with that figure in mind, they’d be utterly unhappy after a few short weeks.

Humans find fulfillment in more than just material. We enjoy being challenged and intellectually stimulated (just look at the popularity of video games) and we need to socialize. If all your life was comprised of was making money, how then would you spend it? You’d make the money and buy stuff. But what do you do with all that stuff? It’s all a juggling act. Celebrities, executives and professional athletes can bask in the glory of larger-than-average salaries, but look at what they endure to achieve such large bank accounts: Celebrities are frequently on tour or shooting films far away from their families and homes; athletes are constantly on the road; countless executives have even been caught trying to steal company money to cover misappropriations and poor business dealings. It’s a slippery slope. Once you find something you love to do, the money becomes only one part of the decision to work. The real reward comes from the feeling you get from doing your job to the best of your ability and having the time to share it with those you care about the most.

3. “Don’t rock the boat.” The fondest proponents of this advice tend to be members of the older generations, many of whom endured the Great Depression. But modern career holders are learning that even in down economies, jobs and opportunities exist – you just have to find them. There are two key types of personnel inside a corporate environment: the workers and the doers. The doers tend to desire more responsibility and challenges, and will seek out avenues to gain more of both in short order. The workers are comfortable being a part of a team, don’t seek additional responsibilities and often resist change if it comes too swiftly.

We’re all different and that’s OK. But if something is awry in your office, does it make more sense to ignore it or to actively seek a solution that may remedy it? When I consider this advice, I immediately think about the passengers from United Airlines Flight 93, which departed Newark for San Francisco on Sept. 11, 2001. We have since learned that this flight, carrying only 37 passengers, crashed into an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, because those 37 brave souls – even in the face of probable death – fought with terrorist hijackers and chose not to submit. That gut instinct and innate desire to change the status quo saved more lives than we’ll ever know; they are the truest of heroes. So, even when in doubt, let your gut guide you when you believe that rocking the boat could result in a major positive difference – because, likely, it will.

4. “Get in good with the boss if you want to move quickly up the ladder.” Again, this ancient way of thinking has cost many a young professional his career. Brown-nosing or attempting to “make nice” with the boss may earn more negative points than positive ones. Instead, consider building on the organization’s momentum with your own special flair, passion, expertise and creative thinking; the ladder you seek to climb will quickly shrink.

5. “Lie if you have to.”  Those who will do anything to get the deal or contract signed, mislead on a resume or simply speak untruths at any level will ultimately fail in their careers. Some misguided mentors offer this poor advice to hungry underlings to ensure bottom-line success. However, trust is as important now as it ever has been due to a large portion of business being carried out using technology. Business deals are no longer exclusively closed in a conference room or business meeting. Sometimes they’re negotiated on a golf course, during a trade show or even via Skype. Build on a foundation of trust and, should you find yourself in a sticky situation, people will be more apt to forgive a mistake, an error in judgment or an oversight because they know you to be honest.

For example, say you can’t meet a demand or a deadline. Rather than lie, negotiate. Ask for more time or resources, if required, to accomplish your goal – but don’t lie. When applying for a job, don’t indicate that you went to college if you exclusively completed online classwork. Someone will inevitably discover the truth – whether it’s HR or your coworkers – and soon enough, you’ll be revealed. Many people believe that “white lies” (those we tell to avoid hurting feelings or to maintain a temporary façade) are acceptable – and maybe in some cases they are. But outright, intentional dishonesty is simply not acceptable. If you’ve ever lied to a parent or significant other, you know all too well that when they catch you in a lie, they become infinitely more upset that you attempted to deceive them than about the original misstep. Build on trust and honesty – never lies.

Of course, it can be challenging to weed out the good advice from the bad, especially when it all comes from such diverse sources. In the end, however, I’ve learned the importance of trusting your gut – it’s certainly served me well, anyway. What are some pieces of advice you’ve received that made you wonder? We’ve all heard the old adage: Choose a career you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. For some of us, this choice is extremely easy, while for others, it’s strangely challenging. My philosophy is to work smart and play smart. An optimal career choice will blur the line between work and play so that you never feel like you’re working because you’ll be doing something you feel passionate and confident about and, ultimately, you’ll enjoy doing it each and every day.

Here are four tips that have guided me when making these ever-important decisions:

1. Choose a career path that inspires you. If you read about a company that builds robotic technology to assist children with disabilities and say to yourself, “That is a brilliant idea, I’d love to work in that field,” you’ve triggered an element of personal inspiration. Before selecting a career path, locate the triggers in yourself to determine what excites and motivates you. Maybe you have a love affair with food and wish to become a chef. Maybe that culinary passion would serve you better in the role of a food critic. Either way, determining a career path that inspires you will ultimately ensure that you’ll pop out of bed earlier than normal each morning to tackle your day and all that may come with it.

2. Pick a career that challenges you. Whether you realize it or not, every human being enjoys challenge. Some of us prefer the challenge of the chase or the win, while others tend to do better when challenged academically or even socially. To repeat a time-honored question, are you in it for the work, or are you in it for the money? Too often, the response is the latter as we load up with financial responsibilities in the way of family, mortgages and necessary material goods. Because of these obstacles, we occasionally get stuck in a rut where we work at the same job for years on end and entrench ourselves with our familiar coworkers, steady paychecks, supportive benefits and minimal daily upsets. However, the happiest people are those who avoid the rut in the first place and instead make themselves a little uncomfortable. For example, if you dream of a career as a screenwriter with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, but don’t have screenwriting skills or Hollywood connections, don’t scrap your dream! Pursue your desires with laser precision. Take screenwriting classes, offer to intern with a production company or even freelance for Hollywood-focused magazines in order to gain contacts, develop ideas and build your network. The end goal is to chase a career that will challenge you in a rewarding way in mind, body and spirit.

3. Educate yourself. Each career field has its own unique set of rules. Anyone outside the profession wouldn’t know most of them, as only those working in a given field are privy to the finer details. For example, being a teacher may seem like a dream to many: shorter days, summers off – sounds heavenly, right? What many of us are blind to are the behind-the-scenes responsibilities teachers have which include detailed knowledge of education laws and regulations, participation in Individualized Education Plan meetings, the hours of required professional development and the intricate and demanding work (not to mention out-of-pocket, unreimbursed cash) that goes into planning and preparing a nine-month curriculum which follows state education guidelines and prepares students for all academic testing. And that’s not even touching all of the expectations and demands individual parents place on teachers. Suddenly, the job doesn’t appear as “easy-breezy” as one may imagine. Fully understanding and embracing the responsibilities of a career choice is part of a personal education process, and the easiest way to gain these insider tips is to shadow someone in the field of interest – or even invite them to lunch to conduct a personal interview. Others who have gone before us will possess detailed information and personal stories that will either encourage us to move forward or, possibly, reconsider our trajectory.

4. Envision yourself in a career and anticipate how it will impact your life. As someone with a family, I’ve learned that all jobs impact those in our lives – be it significant others, family members or friends. Your available time is dependent on your career choice, so keeping your lifestyle in mind is mission critical. For example, if you enjoy a morning workout and cup of coffee with your spouse (things I do before I even review emails each day), a career that pulls you into the hospital to do open-heart surgery at 4:30 a.m. may not mesh with your desired lifestyle. If you have children with special needs who require your care, a career that allows schedule flexibility is very important. Today’s workforce desires greater life balance. People want to “work smart and play smart.” Understanding how a specific career will impact your time and focus will help you architect your perfect life blueprint. Balancing a dedication to a career path that inspires and challenges you at the same time it extends the pleasure you derive from doing that job into your personal life is the best of both worlds.

These four tips have helped guide and shape my professional – and personal – life and have afforded me a balance that brings true enjoyment in all areas of life. What are some of your own personal go-to pieces of advice, tips or even deal-breakers in choosing a career direction?

Jonathan Cronstedt dishes about new products

Empower Network, where I am CEO, is having its next conference in Orlando, Florida, at the end of the month. To say I’m excited would be an understatement. Not only do we have Empower Network’s upcoming three-year anniversary to celebrate with attendees, but also a few new products.

We micro-launched Team Building Formula on Sept. 27 at a live event in Denver. It’s an eight-module training course that gives affiliates the formula that we at Empower Network use to build teams and continually grow and maintain our business. Each of the specifically designed modules in the training break down how to build a team in a network marketing company and maintain momentum in an online business.

I am very passionate about this product because building a great team is essential to the success of any business. Here at Empower Network, we are known for our unique team and unbelievable success, and we want to share what helped us with you.

Another product we’re excited about is our Top Producer Formula, which we also launched at a live event in Denver back in August. The Top Producer Formula is a 13-module training program designed to help affiliates and members figure out exactly what they are missing in their online businesses that might prevent them from making sustainable money. We created this product after customer feedback, and it assists Empower Network members with improving their businesses and becoming top producers.
